Lycoris Desktop/LX

Lycoris Desktop/LX
Like the stability and cost of Linux but not the steep learning curve? Lycoris Desktop/LX could be the operating system for you. It looks and works like Windows XP and it includes all the software you need to get started (see listing below). If you're trying Linux for the first time, or if you've tried it before and given up, then this is the Linux distribution for you. Not only is it familiar to use for Windows users, Desktop/LX installs easily on most PCs. For a detailed tour of Desktop/LX go to http://www.lycoris.com/products/desktoplx/.

However, don't install Lycoris Desktop/LX until you read the following.

No guarantees. Desktop/LX requires a Pentium or compatible processor, 64M of RAM and 1G of unpartitioned (empty) hard disk space. However, as with any operating system installation, there are no guarantees that Lycoris Desktop/LX will install and work properly on every PC, even if it meets the above specifications. For full details of hardware support, see the Lycoris Hardware Compatibility List at http://www.lycoris.com/webservices/hcl/. If any of your PC's components aren't listed here, there's a fair chance Desktop/LX won't install or work properly.

* No second chances. Do not test any operating system, including Desktop/LX, on a PC that you need for your livelihood. An operating system installation can put your PC out of action for many hours or even days, and destroy files. At the very least, make sure you back up all your important data files before installation. And make sure you have your original Windows CD on hand and any necessary Windows hardware drivers, in case you want or need to go back to Windows.

* No support. Like all free Linux distributions, the version of Desktop/LX on the PC User cover disc is not supported by Lycoris or PC User. So please don't contact us expecting technical support for Desktop/LX. If you do need help, you could search the official Lycoris Knowledge Base at http://www.lycoris.com/webservices/kb/ or try the Lycoris Web Community at http://www.lycoris.org, where you will find many tutorials, discussion forums and other resources. You can get support from Lycoris by purchasing a Desktop/LX License Certificate from the Lycoris online store at http://www.lycoris.com/store/.

* Read the instructions first! We've included a step-by-step guide to installing Desktop/LX in this edition of PC User magazine. There's also a full electronic manual on the Desktop/LX CD. Make sure you read both before installing Desktop/LX. It could save you a lot of time and heartache.
